Nike puts Gouchers on display; Kara wins 5,000-meter race

Duluth native Kara Goucher sprinted from third to first in the final lap en route to winning the women's 5,000-meter final Friday night at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., qualifying her to compete in a second event at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

DULUTH FIREWORKS: They're expensive, but the show surpasses all others

So much for Minnesota’s reputation as the land of modest reserve. When it comes to the Fourth of July, Duluth showed Friday that it knows how to pull out all the stops.

Considering it spanned a couple of miles in Cloquet and not all over the world, the Carlton County Historical Society’s version of CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” was a pretty good one.

Cirrus' the-jet takes wing

“ ‘November 280 Charlie Juliet, you are cleared for takeoff’ ... That’s got to be about the coolest thing in the world that I have ever heard,” said a grinning Bill King, vice president of business development at Cirrus Design Corp., as his company marked a milestone: the maiden flight of its first jet aircraft Thursday morning.

Duluth's fireworks in 1988 were city's shortest, but most memorable

At first, many of the spectators — blanketing the Duluth hillside and jamming Bayfront Festival Park 20 years ago this Fourth of July — assumed the shower of sparks and bursts of color spraying from the ground were just part of the show. They cheered until the first explosion.

Restaurant inspections 2008
The Duluth News Tribune reviewed nearly 140 restaurant inspections of all traditional sit-down bars and restaurants in the Twin Ports area over the past year. Of the restaurants in Duluth, 68 percent had at least one critical violation. Of the restaurants in Superior, 65 percent had a critical violation.
